Episode Seven
Dark Horizon

Pale moonlight shimmered on the surface of a small lake, showing the large ripples that were pulsating through it as Godzilla approached. He neared the body of water with a groan, and weakly lowered down to a crouching position. He shoved his entire head into the water, drinking deep and feeling the cool water on his face. He raised his head up from the lake with a misty spray and gulped down the fresh water, hydrating himself. He continued drinking for a long time, alone in the darkness.

The humans still had made no attacks. It was nice, having some peace and quiet. It couldn’t last, though. Godzilla knew this. The humans would become aware of his presence eventually. In time, they would find him. But he wasn’t going to let them find him… he was going to find them.

Godzilla laid down by the lake, which now looked as if it had suffered a terrible drought, and settled down for the night. He would sleep tonight, wait until morning, and then seek out the humans. With them still ignorant to his location, he could launch a surprise attack on one of the human cities. Perhaps he could even level it before they could rally their fighting machines. Godzilla set the thoughts aside, cleared his mind, and drifted off into a deep sleep.

Godzilla awoke to the sound of thundering engines in the sky. He lifted his head and looked up, seeing the source. It was a human aircraft, passing by overhead. Godzilla couldn’t see any weapons… it must not have been for military use. It was flying north, no doubt heading for a city. Godzilla could follow it to them…

After an hour of following the plane through semi-arid forests and a few mild hills, Godzilla could see a city in the near distance. The unlucky human settlement was known as Bulgan. It had once been a backwater city, only recently had it accepted the more advanced aspects of human civilizations. It was almost sparkling with newly built buildings and technologies. Godzilla looked forward to feeling them crushed beneath his feet.

Godzilla slowed down and kept low, ignoring the plane and concentrating on the city. He looked around, pleased to see the lack of war machines. The humans had no idea what was about to happen to them. Godzilla bared his lips, sliding his tongue along his ivory-white fangs and hissing softly. Today, he’d give them a reminder as to why they should fear the name Godzilla…

The citizens of Bulgan went about their daily business, walking through the streets and enjoying the lovely day. A small crowd was gathering at the newly built theater, and a few cars were commuting through town. At least, it looked like they were commuting. The cars began speeding through the street, swerving wildly to avoid each other, running red lights and barely avoiding collisions. It wasn’t long before the citizens on the street figured out what was going on.

Godzilla lumbered towards the city, trampling one of the main roads leading to it, crushing cars and people beneath his clawed feet. He lifted his head and bellowed, terrifying the humans bellow. They had heard about the destruction in Tokyo and Zhejiang, and heard of Godzilla’s massive demeanor… but still, they were shocked as they gazed upon the towering beast. Godzilla cast his shadow down on the streets as he loomed over them, peering over a small building.

Digging his claws in through the roof, Godzilla pushed forward and tore into the top of the buildings. He jumped into the air, flying over the street. The wind current alone threw the horrified observers to the ground. Godzilla landed on his feet, and on top of a the local cinema. It burst into a cloud of rubble as Godzilla’s weight annihilated it.

As people ran screaming through the streets, Godzilla narrowed his eyes and attacked again. He stomped down on a small home, swiped another into oblivion with one of his clawed hands, and flattened a warehouse with his tail, in short order. Sirens blared as ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars buzzed through the streets towards the destruction. Godzilla snarled, turning to see one of the flashing vehicles. His foot descended on the street, and smashed the car as flat as paper.

Godzilla moved on through the city, the more diminutive structures of the city being smashed by Godzilla’s legs. Godzilla paused briefly, seeing a short, wide building nearby. The humans seemed to be crowding around it, seeking refuge in it. Godzilla snorted, fixing his eyes on the red cross-shaped symbol on it’s front and charging his beam. Godzilla unleashed his breath on the structure, the resulting explosion rocking the city.

Godzilla turned, energy still tingling down his spine, and unleashed another heat beam. Buildings exploded and blew away like pieces of paper hit by a tornado, bits of their shattered structures bouncing across the cityscape. Godzilla watched the blue flames spread with satisfaction, glanced down at the screaming humans beneath him, and roared furiously. They scattered, fleeing to any refuge they could find. Godzilla continued through the city, passing the humans with a single stride. Godzilla waded into another cluster of structures, tearing the city apart building by building.

An hour later, little remained of Bulgan. It was a grim scene to behold: charred, black rubble filled the streets and burning corpses were scattered across the ruins. Raging blue infernos, fed by the destruction, spewed smoke into the sky and blotted out the sun. Amidst the carnage stood Godzilla, head bowed, exhaling loudly. He stood tall and unmoving, a monolith. He was a giant, blatant symbol of defiance, silently roaring in the face of all mankind. He awaited the military with feral anticipation.

Slowly, the sound of whirling helicopter blades passed through the smoke, filling Godzilla’s ears. He lifted his head ominously, looking to the sky. As the smoke dissipated, Godzilla could make out the forms of the flying machines approaching. Godzilla stood his ground, not moving an inch as the helicopters approached.

As the helicopters advanced on Godzilla, more aerial weapons soared over the city. A squadron of jets armed with air-to-ground missiles descended on the ruins of Bulgan, the locking system on each machine homing in on Godzilla as the pilots prepared to open fire. Godzilla snarled softly and glanced around. The humans were not about to let Godzilla get away without a fight, and were sending a veritable army after him. Ground support, in the form of tanks, infantrymen, and mobile rocket launchers, wheeled through the deserted streets and formed around Godzilla. They surrounded him, pointing their various nozzles at him, ready to spew bullets and missiles at him from every direction.

A tense moment passed as the two opposing forces maintained their standoff, the wind gently blowing bits of small debris across the street. Godzilla waited patiently, his tail wagging back and forth. Soon the humans would give the signal to attack, and he would be swamped with projectiles. He awaited the instant of attack calmly, seemingly unfazed by the army of machines building up around him. No fear showed in his eyes, only a deep, dark determination.

The order came, and the resulting chaos came so swiftly that it seemed as though someone had just opened Pandora’s box. Missiles, rockets, bullets and shells… they filled the air, buzzing like a swarm of insects. That thought remained in Godzilla’s head as the humans unloaded their ammunition, blasting him from all sides. A swarm of insects… it did sound like a swarm of insects… in fact, he was sure that there was a swarm of insects…

Godzilla snarled and raised his arms to guard his face as the multiple explosives detonated all over him. He pushed through the fiery cloud that had formed around him and roared defiantly, the gust from his breath pushing the nearby helicopters away from him. He lashed out with his claws, tearing two of them from the sky as another fired a volley of pod rockets. The rockets exploded against Godzilla’s shoulder, but did not slow him down. Godzilla lunged at the helicopter, but his attack was cut short. A missile slammed into the side of Godzilla’s head, shoving his face away from the unsteady helicopter. Godzilla stumbled, vocalized his irritation with a menacing hiss, and quickly turned on his attacker: one of the jets.

Godzilla’s spines flickered blue, and he fired a concentrated beat of heat at the jet squadron. The beam incinerated the jet that had made the mistake of attacking Godzilla, scattering the rest. Before Godzilla could decided whether to attack the other jets or finish off the helicopters, tank shells pummeled him from behind. Godzilla screeched and lurched forward, nearly falling over by the sudden attack. Godzilla spun around, the sound of buzzing insects still ringing in his ears. As he loomed over the tanks, he wondered why it had gotten louder after he had destroyed some of the helicopters.

The tanks fired again, their shells hitting Godzilla in the chest. Their effect was like a spitball hitting a brick wall. Godzilla pushed forward and brought down his foot on two tanks, smashing both in a fiery explosion. Godzilla paused in mid strike, hearing a peculiar whir- missiles? Godzilla immediately side stepped, and a pair of missiles soared through the space he had once occupied, flying into the tanks. The tanks exploded, the orange light shining on the side of Godzilla’s snarling face.

Godzilla watched the jets flying towards him, and grunted. He was growing tired of these cowardly machines shooting at him when his back was turned… though he couldn’t blame them for being afraid. Godzilla ran forward, towards the jets, and jumped into the sky with his mouth open. As the jets raced by, Godzilla closed his jaws around one, crushing it to bits. The others flew on, showing no remorse for their fallen comrade. No remorse, no courage, and totally unable to defeat their foes. Godzilla was almost amused by their pitiful nature.

Godzilla’s tail tore through the air, ripping through a helicopter and throwing it’s remains into another. As the last helicopter crashed into the street, Godzilla couldn’t help but notice that the buzzing had not stopped. It was getting louder and louder by the minute. Ignoring the jets as they zoomed towards him, Godzilla glanced around. Were there more helicopters coming?

The rocket launchers swiveled towards Godzilla and opened fire, releasing their rockets like a dark, explosive thunder cloud. Godzilla roared defiantly and waded into the cloud of destruction, hundreds of rockets exploding on and around him, the explosions’ flames lapping against Godzilla’s verdant scales.

Rushing forward like a gargantuan juggernaut, Godzilla plowed through the still-blazing explosions and descended on the machines that had dared to oppose him. He slammed his claws down, then raked them through the earth, throwing hunks of road into the air and laying waste to the rocket launchers. Godzilla’s glance drifted right, scrutinizing a lone tank, trying to retreat. A low, rumbling growl seethed from out of Godzilla’s teeth as he rose to his feet, towering over the fleeing human and his machine. Godzilla’s eyes narrowed on the sole survivor of the human attack force, the sole survivor of the city of Bulgan… and crushed him beneath his foot.

Godzilla stood sentinel once more over the decimated city, listening. The incessant buzzing grew louder and louder, even though the militaries forces were dispatched. There was no longer any question about it, the buzzing was coming from something else… and whatever it was, it was moving towards Godzilla. As the volume of the buzzing grew, Godzilla began to recognize it more and more as familiar. It was like the buzzing of a swarm of flies, only greatly magnified. There was no doubt about it, the noise was insectoid. It must be another monster… but how could one creature be so astonishingly loud?

The golden light coming over the horizon swirled and darkened into a black cloud, like ink diluting in a glass of water. Godzilla watched with amazement as the giant black mass grew larger and larger, filling more of the sky. All the while, the buzzing grew more and more thunderous. The answer was obvious: One creature couldn’t be that loud, because it wasn’t just one creature. It was an entire swarm of them!

As the mass of giant insects spread through the sky, some of them started moving in Godzilla’s direction. Ten or twenty of them suddenly came soaring over his head, passing by him without so much as a second glance. Godzilla tensed, expecting an attack at any minute… but they seemed uninterested in him. As they flew by, he began to make out their forms. They had long, spiny bodies with four legs tucked neatly against soft abdomens, and held to their chests were barbed forelimbs. They were mantises of some sort, grown to an enormous size. Godzilla wondered why so many of them were gathered together…

One of the giant mantises, or Kamacurai, suddenly dropped from the sky. It landed in the ashy streets, kicking up a cloud of thick, gray dust. The giant insect’s head tilted left and right as it’s hair-thin antennae bobbed about excitedly. It lowered itself to the ground, sniffing around the ruins of the city hungrily, pulling the remains of small buildings aside with it’s claws. It appeared as though it were searching the city for survivors to feed on. Then it lifted it’s head again, looking straight at Godzilla.

Godzilla stood still as the giant bug sized him up with it’s enormous, glassy eyes. Maybe it, and the others as well, hadn’t attacked yet because they were afraid. Perhaps they weren’t used to taking on prey of such a large size. The Kamacurai tilted it’s head curiously, apparently making a decision with it’s primitive little brain. Suddenly and without warning, the monstrous mantis pounced.

Godzilla let out a surprised screech as the Kamacurai landed on his side, digging it’s spiky feet into his hide and holding on with it’s forelimbs. It’s various mouth parts opened and closed, green slime dripping from it’s mandibles. It thrust it’s head towards Godzilla to feed, but it’s advance was cut short. Godzilla’s dorsal spines shot forward, their razor-sharp edge cutting the foolish Kamacurai’s head off in a single motion. The headless body, still clinging onto Godzilla, convulsed weakly. Godzilla hissed and threw the twitching corpse down to the ground, eyeing it with disgust.

Almost immediately, the rest of the monsters took action. Several of them dropped down next to the freshly killed Kamacurai, wasting no time in cannibalizing it. Godzilla watched the repulsive creatures rip their fallen comrade limb from limb, tearing it apart like a pack of piranha. Two more Kamacurai dropped down directly in front of Godzilla, cutting him off and taking him by surprise.

The closer of the two Kamacurai lunged with it’s claws, snapping them out at Godzilla with lightning speed. The sharpened tips of the forelimbs hammered him directly in the center of his chest. His scales halted the spikes from breaking the skin, but he felt the full concussive force of the blow deep in his chest. Godzilla reeled back and moaned, the giant insects moving in instantly. One of them jumped up at his throat, the other scurrying around his legs to attack from behind. The Kamacurai attacking from the front landed on Godzilla’s chest and swung again, swiping Godzilla across the face with one of it’s claws. Godzilla winced, then turned his head slowly to glare into the face of his attacker. The Kamacurai shrieked and lashed out again, but Godzilla caught the blow with his jaws, biting down hard on the mantises arm. There was a loud, wet crunch as Godzilla’s jaws made short work of the monster insect’s exoskeleton. Shards of exoskeleton fell to the ground, stained blue with fresh ichors, as Godzilla bit clean through the arm.

The Kamacurai pushed away from Godzilla, screaming wildly as it’s arm sprayed ichors. The second Kamacaurai rushed Godzilla, shoving it’s head towards his ankle and biting down on his Achilles tendon. Godzilla roared furiously, lifting his foot up and out the bug’s mouth. Before it could back away, Godzilla stomped his foot down, crushing the insect’s head and pinning it’s body to the ground. Godzilla turned his attention back to the first Kamacurai and, charging his beam only briefly, blasted it.

His foot wet with mantis gore, Godzilla moved forward, towards the crowd of feeding Kamacurai. Godzilla reached into the swarm of gorging mantids and grabbed two by the base of the thorax, lifting them up from the feeding frenzy. The lightweight kaiju squirmed in his grip, but he held on tight. He threw one aside like a rag doll, letting it slam into the ground. With his free hand Godzilla grabbed the insect’s throat, his fingers wrapping around it’s thorax. Godzilla lifted the Kamacurai higher into the air, lifting it just over his right should, then slammed it down on the other Kamacurai. Those not pounded by their own brother scattered into the air, buzzing around above Godzilla like angry hornets.

Godzilla’s spines lit up, but he was interrupted by the attack of still more Kamacurai. Several smaller, less armored mantises leapt towards him, latching onto his arms, legs, and chest. They stabbed and bit at his flesh, trying to break through his near-impenetrable hide. The light emanating from his fins diminished, Godzilla began reaching down and yanking the Kamacurai off of him, throwing them away frantically. But it seemed that with every one that he removed, two more pounced onto him.

In a burst of savagery, Godzilla suddenly dropped to the ground, smashing countless mantises under his own body weight. Several with only parts of their body crushed tried in vain to crawl back onto Godzilla, but he rolled over, crushing them and throwing many more off. Godzilla scrambled to his feet and grabbed the last one, pulling it off his shoulder and throwing it to the ground. He planted his foot on it’s abdomen and put all his weight on it, squishing the overgrown bug with a loud splat.

The other Kamacurai, still airborne, began to dive bomb Godzilla. He quickly recharged his beam and fired into the sky, blowing one of them to pieces. He directed his beam through the swarm, igniting as many as he could before they reached him. A flurry of razor sharp claws caught Godzilla’s shoulder, shoving him backwards. Godzilla spun around to see the attacking Kamacurai swerving back into the sky and fired on it, his breath weapon blowing it in two.

As Godzilla turned, the remaining airborne Kamacurai swooped down. One passed over his shoulder, one of it’s blade-like claws hitting his shoulder. Another whizzed by his right arm, but came too close and too late. Godzilla took a swing at the giant bug, shoving his right hand into the oncoming Kamacurai and skewering it’s abdomen with his claws. Godzilla tossed the dying monster aside, his claws stained blue.

Another Kamacurai, one of the smaller ones, landed on top of Godzilla’s head. It wrapped it’s legs around his face, digging it’s claws into his chin and holding his jaws shut. Godzilla snorted angrily and shook his head back and forth, trying to throw the Kamacurai. It held on, though, now reaching towards Godzilla’s neck with it’s arms and securing it’s hold. Godzilla lowered his head and raised his arms, grabbing the insect’s thorax in his hands and tearing it off his face. He spun around, holding the flailing kaiju, and threw it into one of the other Kamacurai as it flew towards him.

Aside from the hundreds of Kamacurai swarming in the distance, only two remained. Godzilla lifted his head and roared, challenging the gigantic arthropods to battle. They shrieked and chirped, wings buzzing nonstop as they hovered in the airspace above Godzilla’s head. The two Kamacurai suddenly shot off in opposite directions, one to Godzilla’s right, one to Godzilla’s left.

The Kamacurai descended with blinding speed from both side, forcing Godzilla to counter one and neglect the other. Godzilla grunted hesitantly, and rushed the one on his left. Godzilla met the monster head on, ramming his skull into it’s. It uttered a banshee scream as it’s exoskeleton shattered to pieces and the concussive force of the impact hammered it’s brain. Thrown through the air, the Kamacurai landed several hundred feet away, landing on it’s back in the smoldering ruins of a building. The second Kamacurai slammed into Godzilla’s right side and bit down on his arm, just below the elbow. It’s mandibles went to work instant, chewing on Godzilla’s skin, determined to break through to the flesh beneath. Godzilla let out a startled roar and lowered his head, trying to bite down on the Kamacurai’s thorax. He recoiled, one of the giant insect’s many spikes jabbing dangerously close to the roof of Godzilla’s mouth.

Godzilla grabbed hold of the Kamacurai, trying desperately to pull it off. It wouldn’t be long until it’s jaws would break Godzilla’s skin- it’s mandibles were unbelievably sharp. Godzilla tugged furiously, but the Kamacurai help too firm. All of a sudden, Godzilla let go. Remembering that there were no protective spikes on the upper part of the Kamacurai’s arm, Godzilla grabbed one, and lifted it to his mouth. Godzilla bit down and pulled, ripping the entire arm off in a dark blue spray. The Kamacurai screeched and scurried backwards, it’s open wound spraying ichors all over Godzilla. Godzilla rushed the retreating insect, it’s arm still in his mouth.

The Kamacurai spread it’s wings and leapt into the air, but it wasn’t high enough in the air to escape. Godzilla jumped into the air, and in one deft swing of his head, threw the mantid arm. Like a giant, barbed javelin, the lifeless limb flew through the air and pierced the Kamacurai’s stomach, it’s black tip bursting out of the Kamacurai’s back. Dying and impaled, the Kamacurai’s wings stopped, and it plummeted from the sky. It’s body, lifeless and mutilated, hit the ground with soft thud.

For the third time, Godzilla paused and observed the lifeless city surrounding him. He looked around at the fallen monsters and machines scattered throughout the char. Kamacurai ichor dripped from his chin as he moved his head, surveying the grizzly scene. No doubt he’d see many similar sights in the future. It was a kill or be killed world, and Godzilla had every intention of living a very long life. He’d have to fight to survive, against man and machine, against monsters and mutations. He hoped that one day he could find solitude, but he knew it would not be easy to find. Perhaps it wasn’t even attainable. He didn’t know… but he’d find out, or die trying.

As the Kamacurai swarmed over the forests and hills, Godzilla moved on, leaving them and the ruins of Bulgan behind him. He moved North East, no doubt heading straight towards more humans. Godzilla didn’t care though, if anything, he looked forward to it. As far as he was considered, it was just one more opportunity to show those stupid little mammals whose boss.
